Trams

I have left my birth town almost 20 years ago. I grew in a world, devoid of internet, cable television and blogs...people had inter personal contacts....took life easy ! Entertainment was meeting friends and family, an evening of bridge, travelling by tram. It moved in slow motion, Concorde was a name in the aviation lexicon...people in Calcutta moved slowly with a lethargic sense of purpose. Carbon credits, ecology and green emission were not part of my thesarus..and with trams....no way !

Trams were or even today are an integral part of any body growing up in Calcutta. Trams the streets of Calcutta from pre- dawn till the witching hour is passed. You wake up to the clangs of the tram, as the driver warn the drowsy passenger, he has arrived.
1st class and 2nd class... bourgeois 1st class had lazily swirling fans on the ceiling and the 2nd class (more mass) in a communist state had plain wooden seating and sweat of the humankind to counter.

Today, it was a thrill to sit once more on the tram, 1st class no less, and to reach my destination .
Now, I felt the tram going faster or is it my imagination , maybe I wanted this experience to last longer.

Oh Calcutta !

This year I took the plunge....a fortnight of bliss in my home town...well I don't live here or work here...still for some sentimental reason this is my home town, okay I was born in this city and lived here till I had to flee the nest.
I came back and decided to visit the city, showcase it for my friends who have heard about the city, some have even called the "black hole"....or some graciously say..."it grows on you". I am not sure.
I am not young, Calcutta or few people call it by the new name Kolkata...I cannot think of calling it by the latter, has made me see and experience her through a fresh set of eyes. Suddenly I am a tourist, or a resident...I for a second was'nt sure which hat I was wearing. The city had a new touch and feel to her....it enveloped me as soon as I entered, a sensory overload and stayed on till I left quite satiated.
I have posted a few frames of a somewhat cliched image of Calcutta. Will add more soon. Take care...see you in Calcutta soon.
